Who did Djokovic beat in the 2023 Australian Open final?

The story behind the answer

Novak Djokovic beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the 2023 Australian Open final.

Djokovic won the championship match 6–3, 7–6(7–4), 7–6(7–5), reclaiming the Australian Open title after missing the previous year’s tournament. The victory gave him a record-extending tenth Australian Open crown and his 22nd major singles title, tying Rafael Nadal’s total at the time.

The final also had major ranking significance. Djokovic returned to world No. 1 by winning the tournament, replacing Carlos Alcaraz, who had withdrawn with a leg injury. Tsitsipas, the third seed, was competing in his first Australian Open final and was seeking his first major title.

This result is sometimes confused with Djokovic’s 2023 French Open final, where he defeated Casper Ruud. At Melbourne Park, however, Tsitsipas was the runner-up. The match was decided without a fifth set because Djokovic won both second- and third-set tiebreaks.
