Who developed the original Spyro trilogy?

The story behind the answer

Insomniac Games developed the original Spyro trilogy. The studio created Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon for the original PlayStation between 1998 and 2000.

Insomniac's first Spyro game followed the studio's earlier PlayStation title Disruptor. Artist Craig Stitt proposed a dragon-centered concept, while character designer Charles Zembillas helped shape Spyro's distinctive look. The team moved away from an initially darker, more realistic dragon game and developed the colorful, humorous platformer that became Spyro the Dragon.

The trilogy was published by Sony Computer Entertainment, while Universal Interactive was involved in the franchise's production and ownership during that period. Those business roles are easy to confuse with development, but the developer credited for all three original games is Insomniac Games.

Toys for Bob is associated with Spyro Reignited Trilogy, the later remake collection released in 2018, not the original trilogy. Sucker Punch and Naughty Dog were fellow PlayStation-era studios, but neither developed the original Spyro games. Naughty Dog was especially close to Insomniac and worked nearby, which may explain that common mix-up.
