Who designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.?

The story behind the answer

Maya Lin designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Lin was a 21-year-old Yale architecture student when her entry won a blind national competition in 1981. Her proposal, selected from more than 1,400 submissions, placed two long black-granite walls into the ground in a V-shaped configuration. The walls bear the names of U.S. service members who died or remain missing as a result of the Vietnam War.

The design was deliberately minimalist and reflective. Its walls point toward the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument, linking the war’s losses to the nation’s broader civic landscape. The polished stone also reflects visitors and nearby trees, making personal remembrance part of the experience.

The design initially provoked strong opposition because it was dark, stark, and partly below ground. A compromise added Frederick Hart’s figurative sculpture The Three Soldiers and a flagstaff nearby; those additions do not change authorship of the Memorial Wall. The memorial was dedicated in November 1982.
