Who designed the original Twitter wordmark used when the service launched in 2006?

The story behind the answer

Linda Gavin designed the original Twitter wordmark used when the service launched in 2006.

The early Twitter wordmark was created during the service’s launch period and formed part of the visual identity of the new messaging platform. Linda Gavin is credited with designing that original wordmark, while later Twitter branding involved other designers and agencies.

This is easy to confuse with the company’s bird logos. The original bird icon was based on a stock illustration and was later replaced by the more familiar Larry the Bird design. Martin Grasser designed the 2012 version of the bird logo, not the original 2006 wordmark.

Branding changed repeatedly as Twitter grew from an experimental service inside Odeo into a global social platform. The original wordmark therefore belongs to an earlier stage of the company’s identity, before the simplified bird became its dominant visual symbol.
