Who designed the McDonald’s Golden Arches logo by combining two separate arches?

The story behind the answer

Jim Schindler designed the McDonald’s Golden Arches logo by combining two separate arches.

McDonald’s restaurants originally used paired yellow arches as architectural signs. The arches were associated with the restaurant buildings designed during the company’s early drive-in period, when visibility to passing motorists was an important part of the business model.

In 1962, Schindler combined the two arches into a single M-shaped emblem. The resulting mark was more flexible than the building design because it could be reproduced on signs, paper goods, advertisements, and other branded materials. It also gave McDonald’s a symbol that could identify restaurants even when the full name was not prominently displayed.

Ray Kroc is often linked with the worldwide expansion of McDonald’s, but he did not create this specific logo. Stanley Meston designed important early restaurant architecture, while Schindler’s contribution was the graphic combination that became the Golden Arches emblem.
