Who designed the Counter-Strike map Dust II?
Answer
David Johnston
Answer
David Johnston
David Johnston designed the Counter-Strike map Dust II.
Dust II was created by Johnston and first appeared in Counter-Strike 1.1 in 2001. It was designed as a successor to Dust, one of the series’ earliest and most recognizable maps. Johnston refined the layout to create clear routes, strong landmarks, and balanced opportunities for both teams.
The map uses a Middle Eastern desert setting and contains two bomb sites. Its long A corridor, central area, tunnels, and short routes became familiar strategic reference points for generations of players. Dust II’s simple visual language also made callouts easy to learn internationally.
Dust II is often confused with the original Dust because the names and setting are closely related. Dust II is not merely a renamed version; it is a separate map built as an improved follow-up. Valve repeatedly updated its visuals and geometry while preserving its core competitive identity.
