Who designed Spyro’s character for the original Spyro the Dragon? Charles Zembillas designed Spyro’s character.
Zembillas was brought in during development to create concept art for Insomniac Games’ playable dragon. His work helped establish Spyro’s compact body, expressive face, horns, wings, and distinctive purple appearance. He had also worked on early character design for Crash Bandicoot, making him a natural creative connection between two major PlayStation-era mascots.
The development history has an important nuance: artist Craig Stitt conceived the initial dragon idea, while Zembillas developed and refined the character design that became Spyro. That distinction explains why both names sometimes appear in accounts of the character’s origin, but the standard credited designer is Charles Zembillas.
Spyro’s look changed during production. The character was initially imagined as green, but the team worried that green would disappear against grassy environments. Purple made him more visible and gave the young dragon a stronger identity. The game released for PlayStation in 1998.
