Norman Hartnell designed Princess Beatrice’s vintage wedding dress for her 2020 marriage to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.
The ivory gown was originally made for Queen Elizabeth II, who wore it for a 1962 state dinner at the British Embassy in Rome. Beatrice borrowed it from her grandmother and wore it for her small wedding at the Royal Chapel of All Saints at Royal Lodge in Windsor.
The dress was made from Peau de Soie taffeta and featured a geometric design, organza sleeves, and a vintage-style silhouette. Beatrice and Queen Elizabeth II worked with Angela Kelly and Stewart Parvin to adapt it for the wedding while preserving its historical character.
A common mix-up is to credit the alterations to Hartnell. Hartnell designed the original gown in the 1960s; the wedding adjustments were made decades later. The look helped renew interest in heirloom, reworked, and vintage bridal fashion.
