Who designed Kate Middleton’s wedding dress for her 2011 marriage to Prince William?

The story behind the answer

Sarah Burton designed Kate Middleton’s wedding dress for her 2011 marriage to Prince William.

Burton, creative director of Alexander McQueen, created the gown with the label’s team. The dress combined a fitted Victorian-inspired bodice with padded hips, a narrow waist, and a full skirt. Its lace appliqué was made by the Royal School of Needlework.

The design drew on historic British bridal traditions while remaining recognisably modern. The sleeves and bodice used lace, while ivory satin gazar formed the main structure. The train measured 2.7 metres, giving the dress ceremonial scale without becoming one of the longest royal trains.

A common mix-up is naming Alexander McQueen rather than Sarah Burton. Alexander McQueen was the fashion house; Burton was the designer responsible for the gown. The dress was worn at Westminster Abbey on 29 April 2011.
