Which fashion house created Wallis Simpson’s 1937 wedding dress?
Answer
Mainbocher
Answer
Mainbocher
Mainbocher created Wallis Simpson’s 1937 wedding dress.
The American designer Mainbocher made Simpson’s dress for her marriage to the former King Edward VIII, who had abdicated the British throne in 1936. The gown was a streamlined blue design, a shade later strongly associated with Simpson and popularly known as “Wallis blue.”
The dress reflected the restrained, body-skimming elegance of late-1930s couture. Its colour also made it visually distinctive in photographs, helping establish the association between Simpson and a particular muted blue tone.
Simpson and Edward, then the Duke of Windsor, married at the Château de Candé in France on 3 June 1937. The dress is often linked to the abdication crisis, but the wedding itself took place months after Edward left the throne. Mainbocher is the fashion-house answer rather than a description of the colour.
