In bridal fashion, what neckline uses sheer fabric to create the illusion of a higher neckline?

The story behind the answer

An illusion neckline uses sheer fabric, usually tulle or lace, to create the appearance of a higher neckline.

The transparent or semi-transparent panel usually extends from the bust or sweetheart edge toward the collarbone, shoulders or neck. From a distance, the wearer may appear to have a strapless or low-cut dress, while the sheer section provides additional coverage and visual structure.

Illusion necklines became especially prominent in modern bridalwear because they combine the appearance of a strapless, sweetheart or plunging neckline with the support of a higher overlay. Lace appliqué is often attached to the sheer fabric to make the transition less visible.

An illusion neckline is not the same as a bateau neckline, which follows a solid, high line across the collarbones. The defining feature is the transparent material that creates the visual effect.
