Who defeated Novak Djokovic in the 2015 French Open final?

The story behind the answer

Stan Wawrinka defeated Novak Djokovic in the 2015 French Open men’s singles final.

Wawrinka won the championship match 4–6, 6–4, 6–3, 6–4 on the clay courts of Roland Garros in Paris. Djokovic took the opening set, but Wawrinka gradually turned the match around with aggressive baseline play, especially his powerful one-handed backhand and ability to dictate long rallies. The victory gave Wawrinka his first French Open title and his second Grand Slam championship.

The defeat was especially significant for Djokovic because he was trying to complete the career Grand Slam by winning the one major title missing from his collection. He had already won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open. Wawrinka’s victory delayed that achievement until 2016, when Djokovic returned to Roland Garros and defeated Andy Murray in the final.

The result is also easy to confuse with other major finals from the same era. Andy Murray lost to Djokovic in the 2015 Australian Open final, while Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were not Djokovic’s final-round opponent in Paris that year. Wawrinka’s run also included a quarterfinal victory over Federer.
