Lex Lang debuted as the voice of Doctor Neo Cortex in Crash Twinsanity. He replaced Clancy Brown, who had voiced Cortex from Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back through Crash Nitro Kart.
For Twinsanity, voice director Chris Borders asked Lang to audition after Vivendi Universal Games decided Brown’s interpretation was too severe. Lang was encouraged to make Cortex more flamboyant, self-absorbed, and emotionally childish, creating a performance distinct from Brown’s imposing villain voice.
Lang’s Cortex became one of the character’s defining portrayals. His delivery drew on exaggerated comedy and influences including Monty Python’s Flying Circus, fitting Twinsanity’s unusual decision to pair Crash and Cortex as reluctant partners against the Evil Twins. The game’s broader voice cast included Mel Winkler, Michael Ensign, Susan Silo, Debi Derryberry, Alex Fernandez, Dwight Schultz, and Quinton Flynn.
A common mix-up is naming Clancy Brown, because Brown voiced Cortex in several earlier games and remains strongly associated with the character. Lang’s tenure began with Twinsanity and continued through later entries, including Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time.
