Who converted Liverpool's stoppage-time penalty against Newcastle United on the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend?

The story behind the answer

Dominik Szoboszlai converted Liverpool's stoppage-time penalty against Newcastle United on the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.

Szoboszlai scored in the ninth minute of stoppage time to secure a 2–2 draw at St James' Park. Liverpool were awarded the penalty after Victor Muñoz was fouled inside the area by Lewis Hall.

Newcastle had taken the lead through Anthony Elanga, and Cody Gakpo later equalised for Liverpool. Joe Willock restored Newcastle's advantage before Szoboszlai's dramatic late spot-kick.

The match also carried emotional significance because Newcastle paid tribute to Kevin Keegan, who had played for and managed the club and had also represented Liverpool. A giant “Keegan 7” display appeared in the stadium before kick-off.
