Who composed the original score for Christopher Nolan’s Inception?

The story behind the answer

Hans Zimmer composed the original score for Christopher Nolan’s Inception.

Zimmer’s music helped define the film’s dream-world atmosphere. Its best-known cue, “Time,” gradually builds from a restrained piano figure into a large orchestral climax, mirroring the film’s interest in memory, emotional pressure, and expanding layers of time.

The score also uses a slowed version of Édith Piaf’s song “Non, je ne regrette rien” as an important musical idea. In the story, the song functions as a signal that a dream level is about to end. Zimmer developed musical material from that concept rather than treating the soundtrack as ordinary background accompaniment.

Inception marked another major collaboration between Zimmer and Nolan. Zimmer had previously scored Batman Begins and The Dark Knight with James Newton Howard, but Inception’s score was created by Zimmer alone. He later returned for Dunkirk and several other Nolan projects.
