Who composed the music for the 1998 game Spyro the Dragon?

The story behind the answer

Stewart Copeland composed the music for the 1998 game Spyro the Dragon.

Copeland, best known as the drummer and co-founder of the rock band The Police, created the game’s soundtrack for Insomniac Games and Universal Interactive. His involvement gave Spyro a distinctive musical identity: energetic percussion, unusual rhythmic changes, and melodies tailored to the game’s colorful worlds and adventurous tone.

Rather than composing in isolation, Copeland played early builds of the game to understand each level’s atmosphere. He produced music at a remarkably fast pace, reportedly writing roughly three pieces a day before refining them. The original plan was for songs to correspond closely to individual levels, although that system was not ultimately used in full.

The other names in the options are associated with different musical careers or game projects, not the original Spyro soundtrack. Copeland continued composing for Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage! and Spyro: Year of the Dragon, and later wrote a new title theme for the 2018 Spyro Reignited Trilogy. The first game’s music remains one of its most celebrated features.
