David Scott commanded Apollo 15, the mission that explored the Moon with the first lunar rover.
Scott and lunar module pilot James Irwin landed near Hadley–Apennine on July 30, 1971. They drove the Lunar Roving Vehicle across the surface, allowing them to reach geological sites farther from the lunar module than earlier crews could travel on foot.
Alfred Worden served as Apollo 15's command module pilot and remained in lunar orbit aboard Endeavour. Scott performed a famous televised demonstration of a hammer and feather falling together in the Moon's vacuum. Although Apollo 15 was a major scientific mission, Scott was its commander, not its rover driver alone.
