Who commanded Apollo 14, NASA’s third successful crewed Moon landing?
Answer
Alan Shepard
Answer
Alan Shepard
Alan Shepard commanded Apollo 14, NASA’s third successful crewed Moon landing.
Shepard flew with command module pilot Stuart Roosa and lunar module pilot Edgar Mitchell. Apollo 14 launched on 31 January 1971 and landed in the Fra Mauro region on 5 February, completing scientific work that Apollo 13 had been unable to perform.
Shepard and Mitchell spent more than 33 hours on the lunar surface. Shepard collected samples, deployed scientific instruments, and famously struck two golf balls with a modified club. Roosa remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module Kitty Hawk.
Shepard had already made history as the first American in space in 1961. Apollo 14 was his only lunar mission and made him, at age 47, the oldest person to walk on the Moon at the time. Edgar Mitchell was the lunar module pilot, not the commander.
