Who co-wrote Taylor Swift’s “august” with her for the album Folklore?

The story behind the answer

Jack Antonoff co-wrote Taylor Swift’s “august” for her 2020 album Folklore.

Swift and Antonoff also co-produced the song. Their collaboration combines atmospheric keyboards, strings, reverb, guitar textures, and a soft-rock pulse, giving the track its hazy late-summer sound.

Antonoff was already a major Swift collaborator before Folklore, having co-written and produced songs on albums including 1989, Reputation, and Lover. For Folklore, however, Swift also worked extensively with Aaron Dessner of the National, creating a more indie-folk-oriented sound.

A common mix-up is naming Dessner as the co-writer of “august.” Dessner contributed to several Folklore songs, but “august” was written by Swift and Antonoff. Joe Alwyn was later recognized as a co-producer under the pseudonym William Bowery, not as the song’s co-writer.
