Systrom and Krieger launched Instagram in October 2010. The service began as a mobile photo-sharing application built around quick posting, square images, location information, and simple filters. Its focus helped it stand out in the early smartphone ecosystem.

Before Instagram, the founders worked on Burbn, a broader check-in application. They narrowed the concept after recognizing that photo sharing was the most compelling part of the product. Instagram grew rapidly and attracted millions of users before Facebook agreed to acquire it in 2012.

Systrom served as Instagram’s chief executive, while Krieger led engineering and product development. Both left Instagram in 2018. Their roles are sometimes confused with those of later executives, but Systrom and Krieger are the original co-founders named in Instagram’s founding history.
