Meta’s workplace collaboration service launched in 2016 was called Workplace.
Workplace was introduced by Facebook in October 2016 as an enterprise communication platform modeled in part on familiar social-network features. Organizations could use it for groups, profiles, news feeds, live video, messaging, and internal announcements without mixing those activities with employees’ personal Facebook accounts.
The product was first known as Facebook at Work during its development. Its official launch name was Workplace, and the service was later branded Workplace from Meta after the parent company adopted the Meta name in 2021.
Workplace was aimed at businesses, nonprofits, and other organizations rather than general public social networking. Meta announced in 2024 that Workplace would be discontinued, with the service scheduled to become unavailable after a transition period.
