Who co-directed The Lion King?

The story behind the answer

The Lion King was co-directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff.

Allers joined the project while it was still called King of the Jungle and had already worked in Disney’s story department on films including Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. The project’s original director, George Scribner, left after disagreements about transforming it from a nature-focused concept into a musical.

Rob Minkoff was added as co-director in April 1992. Together, Allers and Minkoff guided the film’s story, character performances and visual style, working with producer Don Hahn and the story team. Their version drew on Shakespeare’s Hamlet as well as biblical stories such as Joseph and Moses, while production research included a safari to Kenya.

The two directors shared responsibility rather than making separate films. Sequences were divided between them, but they exchanged ideas constantly to keep the finished movie stylistically unified. The film opened in 1994 and became one of Disney’s defining animated successes.
