Which actress voiced Sarabi, Mufasa's queen?

The story behind the answer

Madge Sinclair voiced Sarabi, Mufasa’s queen, in Disney’s 1994 animated film The Lion King.

Sarabi is the matriarch of the Pride Lands and the mother of Simba. After Mufasa’s death and Scar’s takeover, she remains loyal to the rightful royal family, even while Scar pressures her to accept his rule.

Sinclair was a Jamaican actress whose career included the television miniseries Roots, the sitcom Trapper John, M.D., and the film Coming to America. The Lion King was among her final screen roles; she died in December 1995, about a year after the film’s release.

A common mix-up is confusing Sarabi’s voice with other famous cast members. Oprah Winfrey voiced Shenzi, Alfre Woodard voiced Sarafina in the 2019 remake, and Angela Bassett did not voice Sarabi in the original film.
