Minh Le co-created the original Counter-Strike modification with Jess Cliffe.
Le, who is also known online as Gooseman, was the programmer and designer behind the initial Counter-Strike project. He worked with Jess Cliffe, who handled voice work, public relations, and community-facing tasks. Their collaboration produced the first public beta in 1999.
The project started as a modification of Half-Life and quickly developed a large online following. Its round-based structure, objective-focused maps, and team roles distinguished it from many deathmatch shooters of the period. Valve recognized the mod’s success and brought Le and Cliffe into the company after acquiring the rights.
Le is sometimes incorrectly described as the sole creator. He was the principal developer, but Counter-Strike’s early creation is credited to both Le and Cliffe. Later versions were developed by larger Valve and Counter-Strike teams rather than by Le alone.
