Who captained the West Indies in the 1975 Cricket World Cup final?
Answer
Clive Lloyd
Answer
Clive Lloyd
Clive Lloyd captained the West Indies in the 1975 Cricket World Cup final.
The final was played at Lord’s in London on 21 June 1975, in the first edition of the men’s Cricket World Cup. Lloyd led from the front after the West Indies were reduced to 50 for three, scoring 102 from 85 balls and sharing a crucial fourth-wicket partnership with Rohan Kanhai.
The West Indies made 291 for eight in a 60-over innings. Australia’s chase reached 274 before the last wicket fell, giving the West Indies a 17-run victory and their first World Cup title. Lloyd’s century earned him the match award as well as recognition for his captaincy.
The answer is sometimes confused with Viv Richards, who was also central to the match. Richards did not captain the West Indies in this final; he made a major fielding contribution by helping produce three run-outs during Australia’s reply. Gordon Greenidge was an opening batsman, while Michael Holding was a fast bowler.
