Answer
Neil Armstrong
Answer
Neil Armstrong
Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the Moon during Apollo 11.
Armstrong descended from the lunar module Eagle and stepped onto the surface at 02:56 UTC on 21 July 1969. His first words included the famous description of the event as “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
Buzz Aldrin followed him about 19 minutes later, while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module Columbia. Collins never landed on the Moon, although he was essential to the mission's safe return.
Armstrong was the mission commander and had previously flown Gemini 8 in 1966, where he and David Scott performed the first docking of two spacecraft in orbit. Apollo 11's surface crew collected samples, photographed the terrain and deployed scientific instruments before rejoining Collins.
