Michael Kamen arranged the orchestral parts for Metallica’s studio recording of Nothing Else Matters.
The song appears on Metallica’s 1991 self-titled album, commonly called The Black Album. Its arrangement expands the band’s acoustic and electric guitar framework with orchestral color, helping the song move from an intimate opening toward a larger, more dramatic conclusion. The London Symphony Orchestra performed the orchestral material.
Kamen was a composer, conductor, and arranger known for combining orchestral writing with popular and rock music. His involvement gave Nothing Else Matters a broader musical scale without removing the song’s central vocal and guitar focus.
The credit is distinct from Bob Rock’s role as producer and Randy Staub’s role as engineer. It is also distinct from the later live project S&M, in which Metallica performed songs with the San Francisco Symphony under conductor Michael Kamen. The Black Album studio recording already contained orchestral participation, but it was not the same full concert concept as S&M.
