Which Xbox One model was the first to support 4K gaming?
Answer
Xbox One X
Answer
Xbox One X
The Xbox One X was the first Xbox One model designed to support 4K gaming.
Microsoft released the Xbox One X on November 7, 2017. The console used a substantially more powerful custom graphics processor than the original Xbox One and included 12 GB of GDDR5 memory. Its hardware was designed to render supported games at native 4K resolution or use higher-resolution assets and enhanced visual settings.
The Xbox One S, released in 2016, could output 4K video and play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, but it generally did not render games natively at 4K. That difference is the source of a common mix-up between the two models.
Game support varied: developers had to provide Xbox One X enhancements, and not every title rendered at native 4K. The “4K gaming” label describes the model’s capability, not a guarantee for every game.
