Which Xbox console was the first to support native 4K gaming?

The story behind the answer

Xbox One X was the first Xbox console to support native 4K gaming.

Microsoft released Xbox One X on November 7, 2017. The premium console was designed to render selected games at native 4K resolution, a major increase over the original Xbox One’s 1080p target. Microsoft marketed it as the most powerful console available at launch.

Xbox One X used a custom eight-core AMD CPU, a substantially stronger graphics processor, and 12 gigabytes of GDDR5 memory. Games had to be specifically enhanced to use its higher performance; not every Xbox One title automatically rendered at native 4K. Some enhanced games instead used dynamic resolution or higher-quality visual effects.

Xbox One S could play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs and stream some 4K video, but it was not the first Xbox designed for native 4K game rendering. Xbox Series X later delivered a newer generation of 4K-capable hardware, while Xbox One X remains the relevant answer for the Xbox One family.
