Which Xbox console was the first to support 4K gaming through a high-performance mid-generation upgrade?

The story behind the answer

The Xbox One X was the first Xbox console designed to support 4K gaming through a high-performance mid-generation upgrade.

Microsoft released Xbox One X in November 2017 as a more powerful version of the Xbox One family. Its custom graphics processor and faster memory were designed to render supported games at native 4K resolution or improve visual quality through techniques such as supersampling on lower-resolution displays.

The console retained compatibility with Xbox One games and accessories, and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games also benefited from backward-compatibility enhancements. It included a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray drive, distinguishing it from the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition.

Xbox One X was not a new console generation. Xbox Series X and Series S followed in 2020 with newer hardware, faster storage, and broader technical capabilities.
