Which Xbox console launched with a built-in Blu-ray Disc drive?
Answer
Xbox One
Answer
Xbox One
The Xbox One was the first Xbox console to launch with a built-in Blu-ray Disc drive. Microsoft included the optical drive in the original Xbox One hardware released in November 2013, allowing it to play Blu-ray movies as well as Xbox One game discs.
The original Xbox and Xbox 360 used DVD-based game media. Blu-ray had become a major high-capacity format during the preceding console generation, and Sony’s PlayStation 3 also included a Blu-ray drive. Adding the format gave Xbox One more disc storage capacity than DVD and supported high-definition movie playback.
The Xbox One’s drive could read standard Blu-ray and DVD media, but it did not support Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. The later Xbox One S and Xbox One X models continued to include optical drives in their standard configurations, while the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition removed the drive entirely.
Xbox Series X also launched with a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive, whereas Xbox Series S was designed as a digital-only console. This distinction is why the Series S is not an alternative answer: it has no optical disc drive at all.
The Xbox One launched in November 2013 in several markets, beginning a generation focused on games, media, apps, and online services.
