The Xbox 360 introduced the system-wide achievement system in 2005.
Achievements were built into the Xbox 360 experience from launch, giving players digital awards for completing specific tasks in games. Each achievement contributed to a Gamerscore, creating a persistent record linked to a player’s Xbox profile.
The system encouraged exploration, difficult challenges, collecting, and replaying games. It also became a recognizable part of Xbox identity and influenced similar trophy and achievement systems on other platforms.
The original Xbox had game-specific unlockables but did not provide the same unified, account-wide achievement framework. Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles continued the system after its debut on Xbox 360.
