Which Xbox console introduced the first built-in hard drive in the Xbox family?

The story behind the answer

The original Xbox introduced the first built-in hard drive in the Xbox family.

Released in 2001, the original Xbox included an internal 8 GB hard drive as standard hardware. This allowed players to save games without purchasing a separate memory card and gave the system space for features such as installed music and downloadable content.

The hard drive also supported the Xbox’s custom operating environment and later helped enable Xbox Live services. At the time, including a hard drive in every console was unusual among home systems and contributed to the Xbox’s higher manufacturing cost.

Xbox 360 continued the hard-drive concept, although some versions used different storage configurations, including memory units and later flash storage. Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles also rely on internal storage, but modern systems use hard-disk or solid-state technology with far greater capacity than the original Xbox.
