The Xbox 360 first introduced Achievements as a system-wide feature on an Xbox console.
Achievements were digital awards tied to game-specific objectives, such as completing missions, discovering collectibles, or reaching multiplayer milestones. Each award contributed to a player’s Gamerscore, creating a persistent record across compatible Xbox 360 games.
Microsoft integrated the system into Xbox Live, allowing players to compare unlocked awards with friends. This turned progress that had previously remained inside individual games into a console-level profile feature.
Later Xbox systems retained and expanded Achievements, so the feature is now closely associated with the broader Xbox ecosystem. The original Xbox supported online play and Xbox Live, but it did not have the same standardized, system-wide Achievement framework.
