Which Xbox 360 game was the first to use the Unreal Engine 3?

The story behind the answer

Gears of War was the first Xbox 360 game to use Unreal Engine 3. Epic Games developed the third-person shooter with its own next-generation technology, making it one of the earliest prominent showcases for the engine on a home console.

Released in November 2006, Gears of War follows Marcus Fenix and the human forces fighting the subterranean Locust Horde on the planet Sera. Its cover-based combat, chunky character designs, and dramatic lighting became closely associated with the Xbox 360’s visual identity.

Unreal Engine 3 was created by Epic Games as the successor to Unreal Engine 2. It supported advanced lighting, physics, facial animation, and high-detail environments. Many later games used it, including BioShock, Mass Effect, and Batman: Arkham Asylum, but those titles did not precede Gears of War as the first Xbox 360 example.

The game also helped establish Gears as a major Xbox-owned franchise. Microsoft published the original title for Xbox 360, and Epic later released sequels before the series moved to The Coalition. Gears of War’s technology and design influenced many console shooters that followed.
