Which Xbox 360 game was the first to sell over one million digital copies?

The story behind the answer

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was the first Xbox 360 game to sell over one million digital copies. Mojang’s console adaptation became a major success on Xbox Live Arcade after its release in May 2012.

The Xbox 360 Edition was developed by 4J Studios in partnership with Mojang. It adapted Minecraft’s block-building and survival gameplay for console controls, added split-screen support, and used a tutorial world to help new players learn the basics. Unlike a boxed retail release, its initial distribution was digital through Xbox Live Arcade.

Minecraft’s Xbox success helped broaden the audience for downloadable games. Players could explore procedurally generated worlds, gather resources, craft tools, and build structures together online or locally. Its simple visual style concealed a highly flexible game system that supported construction, exploration, and survival.

The Xbox 360 version was later followed by editions for other consoles and platforms. It belonged to the older “legacy console” family, which used a different codebase from the Bedrock Edition found on newer devices and mobile platforms.

The million-copy milestone is about digital sales of the Xbox 360 Edition, not Minecraft’s total sales across every platform. Worldwide Minecraft sales later reached vastly larger figures.
