Which woman did J.R.R. Tolkien marry in 1916?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien married Edith Bratt in 1916.

They married on 22 March 1916 at St Mary Immaculate Roman Catholic Church in Warwick. Tolkien and Edith had known each other since Tolkien was a teenager, but his guardian initially instructed him not to pursue the relationship until he was older and had completed his education.

Their marriage took place shortly before Tolkien served in the First World War. Edith later became an important personal influence on Tolkien’s life and is associated with several elements of his imaginative work. Tolkien’s dedication to The Fellowship of the Ring refers to her as “my wife,” and the couple remained together until Edith’s death in 1971.

Edith and Tolkien had four children: John, Michael, Christopher, and Priscilla. Christopher became especially important to Tolkien’s literary legacy by editing and publishing many posthumous works, including The Silmarillion.
