How many members of the Fellowship travel from Rivendell in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Nine members of the Fellowship travel from Rivendell in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

The Fellowship is formed to carry the One Ring toward Mordor and prevent Sauron from recovering it. Its members are Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck, Pippin Took, Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf.

The group’s number is deliberately connected to the nine Nazgûl, the Ringwraiths who serve Sauron. This parallel gives the Fellowship a symbolic balance while also emphasizing the danger facing the travelers. The companions come from different peoples and backgrounds, including Hobbits, Men, an Elf, a Dwarf, and a wizard.

The Fellowship does not remain together for the entire story. It breaks apart after the events at Amon Hen, and its members continue the struggle along separate paths. Readers sometimes count only the non-Hobbit companions or include other allies met later, but the formal Fellowship consists of nine named members.
