What is the name of Bilbo Baggins’s nephew in J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories?

The story behind the answer

Bilbo Baggins’s nephew in J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories is Frodo Baggins.

Frodo appears in The Fellowship of the Ring as Bilbo’s adopted heir and later inherits Bilbo’s home, possessions, and the One Ring. Although Tolkien describes Frodo as Bilbo’s nephew, the family relationship includes adoption and the complicated kinship terminology of Hobbit families.

Frodo becomes the central Ring-bearer of The Lord of the Rings. He leaves the Shire with the Ring and ultimately travels to Mount Doom, where the Ring is destroyed after a long journey marked by physical and emotional hardship.

A common mix-up is confusing Frodo with Bilbo’s other younger relatives, including members of the Brandybuck and Took families. Frodo himself belongs to the Baggins family of Hobbiton.
