Which wildling king survived in the books but died in the show's burning?
Answer
Mance Rayder
Answer
Mance Rayder
Mance Rayder survived in the published books but was apparently burned alive in the Game of Thrones television series. Mance was once a member of the Night’s Watch who deserted after concluding that the Watch’s vows placed him on the wrong side of the real threat beyond the Wall. He eventually united many rival wildling groups and became known as the King-Beyond-the-Wall.
In the show, Mance surrenders to Stannis Baratheon after the wildling army is defeated. Stannis orders him burned for refusing to bend the knee. Jon Snow shoots Mance with an arrow during the execution, ending his suffering. This scene adapts the apparent execution in A Dance with Dragons but changes the identity of the victim.
In the books, Melisandre uses magic to disguise Rattleshirt as Mance and Mance as Rattleshirt. Rattleshirt is burned publicly, while the real Mance survives and is sent on a mission connected to Ramsay Bolton’s letter and the rescue of Arya, who is actually Jeyne Poole in the novels.
Mance’s ultimate fate remains unresolved because the next planned novel has not been published. Tormund Giantsbane is a major wildling leader, but he is not the character subjected to this execution scene.
