Which whisky distillery on Islay produces the single malt Laphroaig?

The story behind the answer

Laphroaig distillery on Scotland’s Isle of Islay produces the Laphroaig single malt whisky.

The distillery was established in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston. Laphroaig is known for heavily peated spirit with smoky, medicinal, and maritime flavors. Its location beside the sea and its use of peat are central parts of the brand’s identity.

Islay is famous for smoky single malts, but its distilleries do not all taste alike. Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Bowmore, Caol Ila, and Laphroaig each use different recipes, still designs, maturation choices, and blending approaches.

The name Laphroaig is commonly explained as deriving from a Gaelic phrase referring to a broad hollow by the bay. The distillery’s distinctive square bottle and white labeling have made it especially recognizable among peated Scotch whiskies.
