The Valve digital collectible card game based on the Dota 2 universe is Artifact.
Artifact was developed and published by Valve, with design help from Richard Garfield, the creator of Magic: The Gathering. Valve announced it at The International 2017, the company’s major Dota 2 esports tournament, using the event to introduce a game set in the same fictional universe.
Its central twist was adapting Dota 2’s three-lane battlefield into a card-game format. Players built decks around heroes, spells, items, and creeps, then fought across three separate boards. Victory came from destroying the opponent’s Ancient or two towers, echoing Dota 2’s objective structure.
Artifact launched in November 2018 for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its complex gameplay received praise, but its paid-card economy and steep learning curve drew criticism. Valve later released the game’s Classic and Foundry versions as free-to-play, after ending major redevelopment in 2021. Hearthstone is also a digital card game, but it is a Blizzard title unrelated to Dota 2.
