The inaugural International was held at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, from August 17 to 21, 2011. Ukrainian organization Natus Vincere, commonly called Na’Vi, defeated Chinese team EHOME 3–1 in the grand final. The victory made Na’Vi the first champions of what became Dota 2’s premier annual tournament.

Valve used the event both to unveil Dota 2 publicly and to establish a major competitive scene around the new game. Sixteen invited teams competed in a double-elimination format after the group stage. The tournament’s headline prize was extraordinarily large for esports at the time: $1 million for the winning team.

EHOME is the most important name to distinguish from the answer because it was the finalist, not the champion. Meet Your Makers and Scythe Gaming were also participants, but neither won the tournament. Na’Vi later returned to the grand final in 2012, though it lost that series to Invictus Gaming.
