Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter was born in Houston, Texas, and spent much of her childhood there. Her mother, Tina Knowles, owned a salon in the city, while her father, Mathew Knowles, later managed Destiny’s Child. Houston’s music, church, and performance communities shaped her early development.
As a child, Beyoncé attended performing-arts programs and competed in singing and dancing events. She also participated in the Houston talent-show circuit with Girl’s Tyme, the group that eventually evolved into Destiny’s Child. These early performances preceded her international fame by several years.
Beyoncé has continued to identify strongly with Houston.
