An uncredited musician identified as “Scott” played keyboards on “The Unforgiven” from Metallica's The Black Album.
The keyboard part is a small but notable detail in the album's personnel credits. The core band lineup on the record was James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Jason Newsted, while several outside musicians contributed specialized parts.
Michael Kamen is associated with the album because he arranged the orchestra on “Nothing Else Matters,” but he is not the keyboard player credited for “The Unforgiven.” Randy Staub was the engineer, and George Marino handled mastering, so neither belongs in that performance credit.
“The Unforgiven” itself was one of the album's most distinctive experiments. It combines a restrained, western-influenced atmosphere with heavy choruses and orchestral color. The song became a successful single and later inspired two sequels: “The Unforgiven II” on Reload and “The Unforgiven III” on Death Magnetic.
