Which Uncharted game introduced the grappling hook for climbing?

The story behind the answer

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End introduced the grappling hook for climbing and traversal in the main Uncharted series. Nathan Drake uses the rope-tipped hook to swing across gaps, reach distant ledges, descend steep routes, and navigate environments that could not be crossed through ordinary jumping or climbing.

The grappling hook is integrated into Uncharted 4’s broader movement design. It works alongside traditional ledge climbing, wall traversal, vehicles, and expanded platforming, making the environments feel more open and physically connected. In combat, Drake can also use the hook to move quickly around the battlefield and gain a tactical advantage.

Players sometimes confuse the grappling hook with earlier rope-based or contextual traversal mechanics. The previous games featured climbing, jumping, swimming, and set-piece movement, but they did not give Drake this dedicated grappling-hook tool. The feature became one of Uncharted 4’s most recognizable gameplay additions when the game launched for PlayStation 4 in 2016.
