In Uncharted 3, which desert contains the location of Ubar?

The story behind the answer

In Uncharted 3, Ubar is located in the Rub' al Khali desert.

Rub' al Khali means “Empty Quarter” and is the enormous sand desert covering much of southern Saudi Arabia, with parts extending into Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. In the game, Nathan Drake and Victor Sullivan follow clues connected to Sir Francis Drake and search for Ubar, also called the “Atlantis of the Sands.”

The desert setting drives much of the game’s survival drama. After Drake’s cargo plane crashes, he wanders through the dunes suffering from dehydration, heat exhaustion, and vivid hallucinations before being rescued by Bedouins led by Salim. Their knowledge of the region helps Drake reach Ubar and rescue Sully.

A common mix-up is confusing Rub' al Khali with the Sahara, Gobi, or Atacama. Those are also famous deserts, but none is the setting associated with Ubar in Uncharted 3. The game’s fictionalized history also draws on the legendary lost city of Ubar, often linked with Iram of the Pillars.
