U2’s album War contains the song “New Year’s Day.”
War was U2’s third studio album, released on 28 February 1983. Produced by Steve Lillywhite, it presented a more politically charged and forceful sound than the band’s first two albums. “New Year’s Day” became one of U2’s early signature songs, driven by Adam Clayton’s prominent bass line, Larry Mullen Jr.’s drumming, and The Edge’s piano and guitar parts.
The song was inspired in part by the Polish Solidarity movement, although its lyrics also use personal and emotional imagery. War also includes “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “Two Hearts Beat as One.” It is often confused with October because both albums belong to U2’s early period, but “New Year’s Day” is specifically on War. The album became U2’s first UK number-one album.
