Which two creators developed Game of Thrones for television?

The story behind the answer

David Benioff and D. B. Weiss developed Game of Thrones for television. They served as the series' principal creators and showrunners, adapting George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels for HBO.

Benioff became interested in the books in 2006 after contacting Martin's literary agent. He read the beginning of A Game of Thrones, shared his enthusiasm with Weiss, and the two realized that the story's size and adult subject matter made a premium television series more suitable than a feature-film adaptation.

The pair pitched the concept to HBO after meeting Martin for several hours. Martin was impressed that they knew the answer to his question about Jon Snow's mother, and HBO acquired the television rights in 2007. Benioff and Weiss wrote the pilot and remained the show's lead writers and executive producers.

The answer is sometimes shortened to “Benioff and Weiss,” which is the standard quiz and production shorthand. George R. R. Martin created the original novels, but he was not one of the two creators who developed the television adaptation.
