Parag Agrawal became Twitter’s chief executive officer in November 2021 after Jack Dorsey resigned.
Agrawal joined Twitter in 2011 and rose through the company’s engineering organization. Before becoming CEO, he served as chief technology officer, where he worked on technical strategy, machine learning, and platform development. Dorsey announced his resignation on November 29, 2021, and Twitter’s board appointed Agrawal as his successor the same day.
His tenure was brief because Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter was completed in October 2022, after which Musk became CEO. This creates a frequent source of confusion: Bret Taylor was Twitter’s board chair and co-CEO with Dorsey’s successor for a period, but he was not the executive appointed CEO when Dorsey stepped down. Agrawal’s appointment also marked a transition from a founder-led company to leadership by a long-serving technical executive.
